Project description
Outputs of the Advice and Assessment project are designed to underpin the Australian Government's resource policy and program development by contributing to:
- enhanced global attractiveness of Australia's exploration investment opportunities through increased knowledge of identified mineral resources; and
- sustainable development through improved resource management based on effective use of geoscientific information in decisions concerning resource access, environmental management and landuse.
Project outcome
Informed decision making and improved resource management, landuse planning and environmental protection.
Project outputs
- High quality, independent scientific and technical advice on mineral resources, exploration and discovery (including offshore programs in Commonwealth waters and uranium as required under the Atomic Energy Act), mining, processing, land access and use, and environment protection;
- publication online by Geoscience Australia of national mineral resource assessments - Australia's Identified Mineral Resources (AIMR);
- information and analyses for Australia's contribution to the OECD/NEA and IAEA publication, Uranium: Resources, Production and Demand;
- Australian Government representation on Joint OECD/NEA-IAEA Uranium Group and associated duties as Vice Chair of the group, including reports on uranium developments in Australia and resource classification issues;
- Australian Government representation on, and reports from the Ministerial Council on Mineral Petroleum Resources Conference of Chief Inspectors Mines (CCIM) concerning the National Mine Safety Framework;
- CDs, manuals and web maps of the Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Island geographic information systems and client support in accord with memoranda of understanding with the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government;
- updated web based maps of renewable energy and fossil fuel power stations for the Australian Greenhouse Office Renewable Energy and Energy Markets programs; and
- Atlas of Australia's Mineral Resources, Mines and Processing Centres (AusMA).
