Geoscience Australia and the Australian Science Teachers Association invite Australian school students to celebrate Earth Science Week 2012 (14 – 20 October) by submitting a short film, up to three minutes long, which relates to Geoscience or Earth Science and people.

This year's theme is "Discovering geoscience".

Be creative, but remember to include accurate Earth Science content and convey your message clearly.

Closing date: 24 August 2012

GeoLogi 2012 is open to all Australian primary and secondary school students. The themes for this competition align with the teaching of the Earth and Space Science component of the new Australian Curriculum. Inclusion of cross-curriculum priorities is also encouraged.

What to do?

To enter, students need to make a film that relates to one of the following themes:

  • Observable changes in the landscape as a result of natural process or human activity
  • Natural hazards – earthquakes, tsunami, landslides or volcanoes
  • Rocks, minerals and fossils, the rock cycle
  • Geological history – geological changes and events over time, plate tectonics
  • Local geology – what’s in your backyard?
  • Satellite imagery and mapping
  • Renewable and non-renewable resources
  • Famous geologists, important Earth Science discoveries and current issues

Entries can be submitted by an individual, class or group in one of the three age divisions:

  • Primary
  • Secondary (up to Year 10)
  • Senior Secondary (Years 11 and 12)

Entries can be in any style or combination of styles. Possibilities include:

  • Animation or claymation
  • Documentary
  • Musical
  • Adventure
  • News report or interview
  • Mobile phone production.

The use of visual props and sound effects is encouraged.

Conditions of Entry
  • Films should be no longer than 3 minutes including titles and credits (excluding ID board and countdown).
  • Films should be suitable for children, parents and teachers to view. Films that use unsuitable language, behaviour, activity or violence will be disqualified.
  • Entries must use original or royalty free music and images. Please ensure that you have the appropriate permissions and include them in your film credits.
What do you need to submit?
  • An entry form including a brief description of your film.
  • A DVD/CD containing your film as an .AVI, .MOV, or MPEG1 file. The disc should be clearly labelled with the film title, school name and contact person.
  • Films should be in PAL format (25 frames/second).
  • All entries must include an ID board at the beginning of the film with the film title, school/entrant name and the words “The GeoLogi 2012 Short Film Competition”.
  • All entries must be received by Friday 24th August 2012.
  • Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in Canberra during Earth Science Week, 14 – 20 October 2012.
Judging Criteria

Your film will be judged by a panel who will consider the following factors:

  • A clear Earth Science theme – refer to suggested themes,
  • Earth Science content that is appropriate to the theme and accurate,
  • A logical sequence and development of ideas in the film,
  • Originality/creativity/innovation in communication its Earth Science theme/message, and
  • Technical competence of the submitted film, such as the quality of the sound, picture and editing.
Prizes

Winning entries will be screened on the Geoscience Australia website. Prizes include trophies, books, DVDs and more!
